this crazy mess of a website i love so much? yep, i showed it to my art teacher!
it honestly wasn't planned at all, but i'm really glad i did. i'm not entirely certain he might revisit or even read this blog, but if he does, hi :-)
somewhat irrelevant but i was considering referring to him as "mr gesu x" for the rest of the entry not for any particular reason that has to do with him as a person but only because it's the title to the song "Mr.gesuX" by jrock band gesunokiwamiotome and i have an irresistable urge to make a reference to my favourite media every 5 seconds. i digress
for a bit of context before anything, one of my friends recently started a site on blogger dot com and invited me to co-author it, and had asked one of my art teachers if it'd be suitable to put in a university portfolio. which prompted me to introduce my own website to him..
tbh i was really really unsure about at first because i mostly prefer separating my online identity from my irl one, but in the end i was like ah fuck it it really cant be that serious
as soon as he'd taken the first look at the index page he immediately went on to show me this artist by the name of dave mckean, who my teacher introduced as an artist who worked closely with neil gaiman (most known for coraline) in many of gaiman's works. it's really amazing the sheer size of this mental database my teacher has, probably built up from years of visiting art exhibitions and the like. i really admire that, but i don't think i could accomplish such a thing myself ..
regardless, he showed me some of mckean's works while saying how bonyou's index page was reminiscent of them. i was Very flattered and at the same time inspired; mckean collages a bunch of different materials together to build jaw-droppingly detailed and atmospheric works. recently i've discovered that i much prefer doing crafts to fine arts, and collage being one of the things i've brought into my school art project time and time again allows me to truly appreciate mckean's mixed-media works.
mckean actually has a website with his works! check it out at www.davemckean.com, the site design itself is pretty sick too. i'll show some of my favourites that i've seen so far, and with the exception of the first image, the rest can be found on his website!
the poster below apparently had real x-ray scans used in it, how fucking cool is that?!?!?!!?? i cant get over it
also "dreams of the carrion kind" what the fuck that's such a sick title for an album im almost mad about it. as i'm writing this i'm also listening to the album but gotta be honest i dont think death metal is my thing but this was a very cool discovery
poster version of the cover art for the album "dreams of the carrion kind" by death metal band disincarnate
aaand more of his cool art below that i particularly liked, definitely visit his website to see it in full res
the last image made me want to try cyanotype on my digital collages. i know itd be so cool
few of his other work for records, from records
this next one definitely stuck with me a lot. very interesting use of a calendar as a concept. the days in my life are raw and visceral
from illustrations
ok yeah that's about it. im very happy to have gotten the chance to learn about a new artist and it's actually one of the positive aspects i've taken out of the a level art & design experience. throughout my project i've just gotten to know so many cool artists whose works really interest and resonate with me. i think it's a really important part in my art life to have all these works to inspire me and my own creations!!
and of course, i have to thank my teacher for introducing amazing artists & their works to all of us.. super cool stuff.
