so recently i've been hugely obsessed with the song ABCDC by indigo la end and have been trying to learn the lyrics to it. i keep replaying it over and over again and its a testament to my love for this song that i haven't gotten the least bit bored of it yet despite playing it well over 10 times over the past week? or so

but that aside (u should totally listen to it first though .. wink wink) im here 2day to nerd out about a revelation that i JUSt had about 10mins ago about this song's title and lyrics as i was talking about it to my sibling.. so right after that i ran to my computer to type this out cuz i havent felt this big brained in like my entire life.

just a warning that its gonna get a little music nerdy. im not boutta analyse every lyric in this song (yet.. "yet", not "ever") but the way its written and delivered by kawatani enon just makes me tear up soooo bad everytime. i might include some in this post later

but in the song there are certain references to "A メロ" (A mero) and "B メロ" (B mero) which can be roughly translated to a and b melody, or what i think is called a and b sections in music theory. personally i quit studying music theory a long time ago so dont hard quote me on what im boutta spout here but if you've done it before u might've come across something like AABA, ABAC, ABCD song structures. for the non musicians and the occasional person who got trauma from struggling thru music theory like me, u can think of it as a story structure. a might be the intro, b is the rising action, c is the chorus and d is the resolution. something along the lines of that. again, dont quote me

see where this is going .. i mean, we might've already reached there already. this naturally means that the song ABCDC ... follows an ABCDC song structure. let me show u the lyrics and it'll make perfect sense. also u should listen to it too. listen to it.. listen ..

indigo la end is a japanese band so.. the lyrics will be in japanese .. but i'll highlight the sections so its clearer to see.

(a section)

(b section)

(c section)

(d section)

(c section)

so if you just look at it you'll probably notice that the sections in green are basically the same lyrics save for an extra line at the end of the second one, but my point still stands. the lyrics even mention an Aメロ and Bメロ (which i've bolded) in the respective a and b sections which might've been kawatani leaving a sort of hint? idk if this seems obvious to more musically inclined people but seeing as i haven't touched music theory in years i was pretty proud of myself for even recalling the abc thing o( ̄▽ ̄)o

now i've finished feeling good about spotting the reference all on my own its time for me to spotlight some of my favourite lyrics!!!

the first one that goes 「頭の中引っ掻き回して やっと見つけた言葉は サビにしてはちょっと地味で歌えなかった」- "i searched through my head and finally found the words, but it was too simple for the chorus, so i couldn't sing it"

there's something so ahh.. (imagine me wiggling my fingers) (i have not found the words) .. something so good .. about it.. (i still have not found the words)

its like.. . i kinda get it; sometimes for something so important you just wanna be ambitious and you imagine the best version of the thing you're gonna create. idk if im making sense rn but its something along the lines of the perfectionism mindset which if you've read my previous entries you'll know i rant about very frequently and often struggle with in my art.

and the next one in the last section 「何気ない貴方のその文字が愛しかったんだ その距離が愛しい」- this im struggling more to translate; with the help of FireAries' translation on lyricstranslate.com i'd go with something like "your ordinary words were so precious to me; the distance between us is so precious". im not that obliged to give an accurate truthful translation of the lyrics but my use of the word "ordinary" here might not be the best choice, im looking more for a word that implied that the words were an everyday occurence and so might be thought of as nothing special to an outsider, but when you love someone this much, any words that they write (文字 being more of the written letter than spoken word) is essentially something to hold dear. and where it says about distance makes me think about the saying "absence makes the heart grow fonder" or something but yea im sooo in love with this line. i think it tells us so much about the happiness you get from loving someone in just one or two lines. so good.

dont get me started on kawatani's vocals .... ...... dont

SO MUCH raw emotion omggg i cant ever get enough of the way he sings this song ahhhh

that aside yes i've highlighted my favourite lyrics but i basically love all of it. the lyrics are my precious 文字

if i were more into music theory i could totally ramble on about how maybe the chords and chord progression and keys used add to this loving feeling but uh.. im not qualified i just kind of Feel like it just does. intuition.

so anyways the part where it goes その距離が愛しい the notes are in a descending order and i think that adds like a certain finality to it, its kind of like being certain that everything that was just sung about is their true thoughts and feelings. maybe if i knew if it was a perfect cadence or an imperfect one or whatever id be able to comment more on it but - say it with me - i dont know music theory!!!
